I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Welcome to the new SCOTUS

Bush made a wise decision when he selected John Roberts. That's not saying I don't hate the idea of John Roberts being on the Supreme Court, I do. But he will be on the Supreme Court. I will reiterate, we knew this was going to happen when we lost in November. Bush was beatable in 2004 and we didn't beat him. Steve Soto tells us why we should be grateful.
All I can say is that I am actually relieved that Bush didn't fulfill my worst fears and select a real knuckle-dragger. And for those of you who fear that he will just do so when he gets his next chance, trust me: the way the polls are headed, this was his chance to put a card-carrying member of the American Taliban on the court, and he passed. There will be no other chance.

We don't have to wage a fight against a Hispanic nominee that would do us damage next year.

We don't have to wage a fight against a female nominee that would do us damage next year.

We don't have to wage a fight against a black nominee that would do us damage next year.

Be glad for all three of these things. Instead, Bush went with a pick that his dad would have made. Keep that in mind as a sign of how weakened this White House is right now that they went with someone his dad would have nominated instead of trying to ram through a James Dobson annointee.
We should ask questions and wage a fight against Roberts but not at the expense of using the war and the Plame affair to further weaken this corrupt and dishonest administration. I think Steve is right, this was Bush's best chance to ram through a real wingnut. Instead he gave us a hard core conservative. Bush will have more SCOTUS nominees. We must concentrate on further weakening the White House by keeping the failed war and the Plame affair in the limelight.

The big news that is not quite news yet is the new Iraqi government making nice with Iran. It appears that the Bush administration has replaced Saddam with a Shiite theocracy friendly with "Axis of Evil" charter member, Iran. This should be enough to get even the war hawks asking questions. Like the Downing Street Memos, this turn of events is receiving very little play in the press. We need to force them to report on it like we did the memos.
