During this time of political/tribal conflict here is a picture of a couple of friends taken in Munich circa 1970.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Wildflower Break
After a week of below average temperatures we had a pleasant day in the low 70s on Saturday here in the Pacific Northwest. I took the opportunity to head to the woods and check out the wildflowers. The most exciting find was two rare Calypso Orchids also known as fairy slippers. The flowers themselves are about the size of a quarter.

Also in bloom was the Fawn Lily

and the Giant Trillium.

Winter - not so gray
Not everything is gray in Western Oregon in the winter. There is plenty of color if you know where to look.

Happy Holidays
Unless something really big breaks we here at MEJ and Mid Stream Radio are going to take a few days off. We wish you all a happy holiday season and we will be back in two or three days.Update
OK, I'm back for a minute. This is just too good - Bill (I'm always wrong) Kristol makes his 2008 predictions.

Friday Mountain Blogging
This is Oregon's Mt. Washington. At 7,795 feet it's not the most impressive of the Cascade volcanoes and since it hasn't erupted for several thousand years it doesn't get the attention of Mt. St. Helens. The picture was taken at McKenzie pass, altitude 5,300 feet. The lava flow in the foreground is about 2,500 years old. The Indian name for the mountain was Squaw Tit since from a distance it resembles a woman's breast.Click on picture for larger image.

Friday Orchid Blogging
Not terribly inspired today so here's a picture. Jazz had the first episode of Mid Stream Radio on blogtalkradio today. I missed most of it myself but hope to chime in on Monday. I think what we will try to do is talk about subjects we have discussed here at MEJ. The broadcast is at 1:00PM Eastern, 10:00AM Pacific so check it out if you have a chance. Most of the talk today was about the Democratic debate - I didn't watch it. Hopefully something will inspire me tomorrow, if not I can probably find another picture.Note

A splash of color
For much of the year the forests of Western Oregon are mostly green - beautiful but a bit monotonous. But for a few short weeks in the fall the vine maple turns electric.

Road Trip
Had to make a trip east today via the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. This shot taken at the east end of the gorge.

Smoking
After checking the news this evening I don't really feel writing anything but I do feel like smoking something so here is a picture. Yes, it's a poppy.

Day after day alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.
Well on his way his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices talking percetly loud
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,
But the fool on the hill . . .
Nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never shows his feelings,
But the fool on the hill . . .

Moon Rise
While we may not know where the spirit of Jerry Falwell has gone I think we can guess where the spirit of Ansel Adams resides - the New Horizons spacecraft.
