I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Duelling Headlines, who to believe?

We have two headlines today:
Rumsfeld Urges Optimism on Iraq
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld today urged Americans to be more optimistic about the situation in Iraq, saying that people on the ground there have more optimistic views than what is being portrayed in the U.S. media.

[....]

He said there was a "jarring contrast between what the American people are reading and hearing about Iraq and the views of the Iraqi people." The Iraqi people and the U.S. military deployed in the country, he said, were optimistic about the progress of the war there.

"Which view of Iraq is more accurate?" Rumsfeld asked. "The pessimistic view of the so-called elites in our country or the more optimistic view of millions of Iraqis and some 155,000 U.S. troops on the ground?
But wait, what do the Iraqis really think?
Iraq VP Disputes Bush on Training of Forces
DUBAI (AP) The training of Iraqi security forces has suffered a big "setback" in the last six months, with the army and other forces being increasingly used to settle scores and make other political gains, Iraqi Vice President Ghazi al-Yawer said Monday.

Al-Yawer disputed contentions by U.S. officials, including President Bush, that the training of security forces was gathering speed, resulting in more professional troops.
Although al-Yawer is a Sunni and has reason not to be happy with a mostly Shia military his comments do sound like other reports we have heard of late. This is bad news for the Bush administration because it is contrary to what Bush has been saying and what Rummy was telling us today. Another blow to the already damaged administration credibility when it comes to Iraq. As Digby said yesterday it was a lack of credibility that finally led to the withdrawal from Vietnam and it will probably be the same for Iraq.
