What do you think the implications of the compromise will be for other issues? I'm a little concerned this might usher in a compromise on Social Security, but if you're correct, and this is a rebuke of Bush, then maybe that won't happen.I think it is way too early to determine exactly what will happen. It is too early to declare winners but it's not too early to declare losers. The big loser has to be Bill Frist. I think he was finished before he started but this certainly puts a nail in his coffin. What happens now may depend on how many stupid things Mullah Dobson and company force Frist to do. Frist may have the opportunity to do something as stupid as the Terri Schiavo debacle right up front, the embryonic stem cell bill just passed by the house. Mullah Dobson will insist Frist stop it in spite of the fact that a Republican poll shows that nearly 70% of the US citizens support it. He he refuses to bring it to the floor several Senators, both Republican and Democrat, have said they will attach it to another bill. The bill will easily pass the Senate. At this point will Frist choose to filibuster? Will Mullah Dobson insist that he filibuster? This possibility would be a huge victory for the Democrats.
Something else to watch is the vote on Janice Rogers Brown. Tom Oliphant, on Air America this morning, thinks she may be so objectionable that enough Republicans may vote no to defeat her. I'm not going to hold my breath for that one but it's something to watch.
There are dangers. I don't entirely trust the seven Democratic "moderates", one of them is Joe Lieberman after all. Will they agree to a stupid compromise on Social Security? A dangerous possibility.
John Bolton will probably be the next ambassador to the United Nations. Probably not as horrible as it might seem as the world already knows he's an asshole and will simply refuse to deal with him. The State Department will be wheeling and dealing in the background.
It's really too early to say what the ramifications of the compromise will be but it could be a plus for the Democrats if they play it right and Frist does what he has done best recently and plays it all wrong.
