Have the Radical Republicans shot themselves in the foot again? First it was Social Security Privitization. The more they try to push it the more Bush drops in the polls. That may turn out to have been a flesh wound compared to the Terri Schiavlo political/media event over the weekend. The ABC News Poll this morning tells the story.
Was it appropriate for congress to get involved?
Yes: 27%
No: 70%
Now I haven't seen any issue in the last few years that 70% of the American people could agree on.
Did political leaders become involved for political advantage?
Yes: 67%
No: 19%
The political nature of the Terri Shiavlo media event was so obvious that 2/3 of the American people could see through it. George W. Bush interrupting his brush clearing in Crawford for the first time since he took office only added to that perception.
So, it was obvious pandering to the Radical Evangelical Christians. Did it work? When Evangelical Christians were asked if it was appropriate for congress to get involved the result was surprising and I'm sure a shock to Frist, Delay and company.
Yes: 44%
No: 50%
Half of the target group thought it was a mistake.
Hubris, thy name is Republican.
He who lives by Hubris dies by Hubris.
