I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

The Politics of the War on Terror

CNN, quoting unnamed government sources, reported that Portland was one of 7 cities with al-Queda have sleeper cells. Was it part of an FBI PR campaign to promote their agenda? Portland city councilman Randy Leonard thinks it might be. You see Portland wants the FBI to agree to some conditions before the city agrees to participate in Joint Terrorism Task Force. The Portland city council has a little more respect for the constitution than the FBI or the Department of Homeland Security and has asked for the following conditions:

  • The mayor and the police chief to supervise Portland police officers in the JTTF

  • The cost of police participation in the JTTF would be covered by the federal government

  • The FBI is to recognize that Portland police cannot investigate organizations for their political beliefs
The FBI is balking at these conditions. Is this an attempt by the FBI to scare the hell out the Portland citizens to force the city council to drop their conditions?
Leonard said that too often in U.S. history, civil liberties have been suspended during times of crisis. The ordinance, he hopes, will address that issue.

"You have to know your history, or you're doomed to repeat it," he said.

The aim of the ordinance is not to put Portland in a position to choose whether to participate in the JTTF. Instead, it will be up to the FBI "to choose these conditions or not" if it wants Portland police involvement, Leonard said.
We have seen the War on Terror used for political ends repeatedly since 911. It wouldn't be too surprising if this were just another example.
