We discussed the nomination and nomination hearings of Alberto R. Gonzales a few weeks ago and noted that he had no mind of his own. He is a loyal Bush/Cheney soldier but unqualified to be Attorney General. The nomination hearings for Condi Rice today was more of the same. One of the more striking aspects of today's hearing was not so much what Dr. Rice said but how she said it. When asked questions about what she believed the answer was almost always we believe. When asked what do you think of.......... the answer was almost always we think................... . Just another good Bush/Cheney soldier with no mind of her own. Of course they will both be confirmed and the worst National Security Advisor in history will become the worst Secretary of State in history. Mr Gonzales has not been nominated to be Bush's Attorney General but to be the Attorney general of the United States. Dr. Rice has not been nominated to be Bush's Secretary of State but the Secretary of State of the United States. That's not what we are getting.
Steve Soto at the Left Coaster has an excellent post that touches on this. The primary emphasis of his post is that it doesn't really matter if Bush is in charge or if it is actually Cheney and Rumsfeld, they work as a team, an ideological machine. Appointees like Gonzales and Rice are also part of that ideological machine, having the same beliefs as Bush/Cheney. It has to remind one of the Borgs from the old Star Trek series, one assimilated mind.
