I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Rumsfeld's place in history
Yesterday I discussed how David Broder had missed the point when he discussed the liabilities of both Bush and Kerry. Broder didn't discuss what may be Bush's biggest liability, the people in his cabinet. This point really struck home today with the story that 380 tons of powerful explosives had been allowed to fall into the wrong hands after the invasion of Iraq. It would appear this occurred because there were not enough troops on the ground to secure the installation where the explosives were stored. Rumsfeld resisted the opinions of those who told him many more troops would be required. He cavalierly dismissed the extensive looting that occurred after Saddam was overthrown as something free people do. It is now easy to see that Iraq and the American soldiers there are far less safe because these explosives were lost. This not only represents incompetence but criminal incompetence, in fact criminal negligence. Rumsfeld will go down in history as the most incompetent Secretary of Defensive this republic has ever had. That is George W. Bush's liability.
