In his column A Less Than Ideal Choice, David Broder discusses the weaknesses of both George W. Bush and John F. Kerry. He does a pretty good job of describing the liabilities of both candidates but misses the over all point, George Bush's presidency is a failure not so much because of George W. Bush but because of the people he has surrounded himself with. When we get a new president we really get a new team. When Bush leaves so will the delusional neo-cons and fanatical right wing Christians who's policy is based on faith rather than facts, and the neo-feudalists who's policy is based largely on greed.
One of Kerry's "liabilities" that is mentioned by Broder and others is "a tendency to overstudy issues". Compared with the unwillingness of the current President to study issues at all, this seems more of a plus than a minus. The new team Kerry surrounds himself with will be reality-based not faith-based, seeking out all of the facts not just those that fit their faith-based preconceived notions. There will be a new philosophical foundation and I'm sure that I will frequently be at odds with at least some of it, but at least it will be based on the way things are rather than the way we would like things to be.
