We have been very hard on the Bush administration for painting a rosy picture of the deteriorating situation in Iraq. It is certainly right to do that, but in all honesty John Kerry isn't much better. The war in Iraq is lost, I doubt it was ever winable. Many in both the Bush administration and the Kerry campaign have to know this. But the reality is You Can't Tell The Truth And Win. In Kerry's case if he were to say it now he would not only lose the election but would indeed endanger American lives. The same is true for Bush. There may well already be a plan in place to withdraw American forces but it must already be in progress before it's announced to minimize the loss of life. The perception, although it may be inaccurate, is that Kerry voted for the war so the rightness or wrongness of the war is not to Kerry's advantage. The Kerry advantage is emphasizing the gross incompetence in handling the war on the part of the Bush administration.
