If the Republican Party really wanted to hold on to the White House in 2009, it's pretty clear what it would do. It would grit its teeth, swallow its doubts and nominate a ticket of John McCain for president and Mike Huckabee for vice president -- and president-in-waiting.
... McCain and Huckabee have been notable for their clarity, character and, yes, simple humanity.
Sadly, we're traveling and seeing family this weekend so I have little time to post, but Broder may be partly right here. I do think that, at least on a national basis, the populist pull of McCain combined with Huckabee's appeal to the Christian Conservative base might well be their best shot at victory. Would it be enough to overcome the general bad taste that the majority of the country seems to have in their mouth for the GOP right now? Anything is possible, but even that ticket would hardly turn it into a gimme for the Republicans. We'll try to talk a bit more about that tomorrow on Mid Stream Radio. Tune in and let us know what you think?
Just what the country needs - someone who believes it's OK to bomb the rest of the world back to the stoneage teamed with someone who doesn't even believe in the stoneage. Broder truly is suffering from dementia.
