Iranian president: 15 sailors, marines to be freed as an Easter 'gift' to U.K.
TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his government would release the detained 15 British sailors and marines Wednesday as an Easter gift to the British people.Joe Gandelman observes:
Iranian state television later showed the British sailors talking to Ahmadinejad at the country's presidential palace apparently minutes before they were to be freed.
And he had an editorial comment of sorts, too:Yes, Ahmadinejad is crazy - like a fox. George Bush and company are just crazy. He criticized Britain for deploying Leading Seaman Faye Turney, one of the 15 detainees, in the Gulf, pointing out that she is a woman with a child. This section of the AP story, plus the release underscore a point: he’ll prove a particularly slippery adversary on the international stage, since he set up the crisis, took it to the brink, then pulled back portraying himself as magnanimous — and taking a swipe at the British for being soft on motherhood. This suggests less impulsiveness than a political shrewdness that could prove dangerous to his international adversaries who could underestimate him.
“How can you justify seeing a mother away from her home, her children? Why don’t they respect family values in the West?” he asked of the British government.
The people of the United States and the World want the George W. Bush to be gone. They want some competence and sanity at the top of the worlds only super power once again. Yes George Bush is irrelevant and everyone knows it. Everyone but him that is.
