Two Headlines

We have two headlines this morning that say it all.

1. Snow disputes claim that Iraq is blunder

   WASHINGTON - The White House on Sunday disagreed with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claim that the Iraq war was "the worst foreign policy mistake" in U.S. history.
   
   White House press secretary Tony Snow said it was important to remove Saddam Hussein from power and noted that a majority of senators voted in 2002 to authorize the use of force in Iraq.
   
   He said President Bush should not see votes in Congress in opposition of his new Iraqi strategy as a rebuke.
   
   "The strategy has barely had a chance to begin working," Snow said.



2. 2 Baghdad car bombs kill 56, injure 127

   BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two car bombs exploded in an outdoor market in Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 56 people and injuring scores in the deadliest attack since U.S. and Iraqi forces began a major security push around the capital last week.
   
   The twin blasts — which tore through the open-air market in the mostly Shiite district of New Baghdad — marked the first major response by militants to the sweep launched last week and a sobering reminder of the huge challenges facing any efforts against the well-armed factions.
   
   The death toll was reported by police and ambulance service officials on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media. At least 127 people were injured, they reported.

   The U.S. military reported the deaths of two American soldiers, one of them in Baghdad who was killed when an insurgent hurled a grenade at his vehicle. The other soldier died when a patrol came under fire north of Baghdad, the statement said. Both died Saturday.

The new surge, just like all the old surges, cannot heal 1400 years of Shiite-Sunni hostilities that were set free when the US "blundered" into Iraq. If starting a war that has destabilized the region and is sucking the life's blood out of our military is not a blunder I don't know what is.
