Restless at CATO - continued

The other day we pointed out a series from the CATO Institute, The GOP and Limited Government: Do They Have a Future Together?. We discussed the first in the series by David Frum here. The second in the series by Bruce Bartlett is now online. He paints the same gloomy picture that Frum did. He starts out by stating that the current Republican party is too broken to fix;

David is also right that the Republican Party has become deeply corrupt and appears to lack any leaders with the potential for pushing it back in a more conservative direction. It is going to have to suffer a defeat of Nixonian proportions in order to cleanse the party and create opportunities for new leaders to emerge that may be able to right its course.

The rest of his piece is primarily a conservative rant against the sins of wealth redistribution and the blessings of the very unprogressive Value Added Tax (VAT).
