I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Because It's Hopeless!

The very future of Democracy in the republic know as the United States of America my well be decided in the next few days. Of course I'm talking about the Senate hearings on the Bush administration's illegal wiretaps of US citizens. Over at The Left Coaster, paradox says "Our Senators are Scared". The result will be that our constitution and the separation of powers will be steamrolled by the tyrannical Bush administration along with our spineless and disorganized Democratic Senators. The Democrats demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of mounting any kind of opposition to the Bush administration during the Alito hearings. It wasn't the Democrats in congress that prevented Bush and company from destroying Social Security it was the American people who just said NO. During the Alito hearings there was an absence of overwhelming opposition to Alito and the Democrats simply folded. I expect to see the same during the NSA wiretap hearings. It's not so much that the Democrats in the Senate are afraid but that they are incompetent and unable to come up with a unified plan of attack. The progressive cause will not be defended by the Democratic party as it is currently configured. In the comments section of the above linked post "Yoni" asks a very relevant question:
How come the Democrats have so many (well-paid) strategists but not a single strategy?
Great question but there is no answer. The death of the Democratic party didn't start with the election of George W. Bush, it started with the election of William J. Clinton and the hijacking of the Democratic party by the corporatists at the DLC.

So I have little hope that the NSA hearings will turn out well and if they do it will be because a few good Republicans made it happen. I'm not going to waste my time contacting Senators. The Democratic lawmakers are incapable of doing anything about it if they wanted to.
