I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

FBI and Homeland Security Identify Greatest Threat to America

Qaeda sleep cells in the U.S? A nuclear armed Iran? Resurgence of the Taliban?

Nope... Vegans.
The ACLU of Georgia released copies of government files on Wednesday that illustrate the extent to which the FBI, the DeKalb County Division of Homeland Security and other government agencies have gone to compile information on Georgians suspected of being threats simply for expressing controversial opinions.

Two documents relating to anti-war and anti-government protests, and a vegan rally, prove the agencies have been "spying" on Georgia residents unconstitutionally, the ACLU said.

For example, more than two dozen government surveillance photographs show 22-year-old Caitlin Childs of Atlanta, a strict vegetarian, and other vegans picketing against meat eating, in December 2003. They staged their protest outside a HoneyBaked Ham store on Buford Highway in DeKalb County.
Clearly young Caitlin has angered the powerful HoneyBaked Ham cabal in Washington.

Now seriously, there are two sides to this issue. If the only material uncovered consisted of pictures taken outdoors at a public rally, then the ACLU is on shaky ground here. I'm certainly not wild about the idea of Homeland Security and the FBI snooping around peaceful protesters, but when you go out in public to put on a display of any kind, the fact is that you might wind up having your picture taken. It may be by the press, private citizens, or perhaps even the government. Now, if they can show that the FBI was tapping Cailin's phone, breaking into her home, etc. without a warrant, then we've got some serious questions to ask.

But it still reeks of something bad. Really bad. I think that the ACLU spokesperson makes a very valid point with this statement.
"We have heard of not a single, government surveillance of a pro-war group," Weber said. "And I doubt we will ever hear of a single surveillance of a pro-war group."
Yeah. Kind of funny how that works, out, isn't it? I mean, youv'e got a choice of one group advocating peace and one advocating violence, albeit in foreign lands, and which one do you label as a "threat" to America? Well, duh. I've never trusted those damned vegans anyway.
