There is an old Arab proverb; “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. We progressives have an enemy in the Bush administration and it's federalist cultists. We share this enemy with what we would think is an unlikely ally, the Libertarian wing of the Republican party. Although we have many differences with the Libertarians we have some common ground. Opposition to imperialist wars like Iraq, opposition to government invasion of privacy and perhaps most important, opposition to the imperial presidency as envisioned by the Bush/Cheney regime. The leadership of the Democratic party has been ineffective in fighting this enemy and we are losing the war. This is perhaps the most important ideological war this country has fought in its 200 plus years because it's about the very foundation this country was built on. I spoke of the big battle that has apparently been lost, the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. The performance of the Democratic lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee was pathetic. It was just the latest in a series of ineffectual opposition by the democrats over the last five years.
We need allies in this war against Bush and the Federalists and I see a likely ally in the Libertarians as represented at LewRockwell.com. A frequent contributor there has been Ronald Reagan's assistant treasury secretary Paul Craig Roberts. Roberts has been talking about the fascist threat the Bush administration represents with as much skill as out own David Neiwert. LewRockwell.com has regularly carried articles by Tom Engelhardt and from Antiwar.com. This war against the federalists make our differences seem irrelevant. We are literally fighting for the right to disagree in the future. What we need more than anything is a coalition of the willing, we can't go it alone.
