In a 49-42 vote, (with nine Senators who need to have a quick lesson about primaries not even voting) the Senate put a rider on the defense bill stating that detainees at Gitmo can't challenge the legality of their detention in Federal courts using a writ of habeus corpus. I suppose since the Republicans can't get away with openly eliminating the rights of Muslims, Jews or racial minorities here at home yet, the next best thing was to eliminate the rights of people we capture and keep for years on end without filing charges against them.
For GOP critters who are part of the current Moderate Revolt were honest enough to vote against this abortion of justice. (Chafee (RI), Specter (PA), Smith (OR), and Sununu (NH) ) DINOs voting for this garbage were: Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Ron Wyden of Oregon. No real surprises there.
The wingnutterati came out in immediate force to celebrate the trampling of basic human rights upon which this country was founded. (See the petite wingnut mistress herself, Malkin, for the usual list of suspects.) Talk Left has the sensible outlook on this, as usual.
Word on the street is, already, that the Dems will try to force this to a vote again on Monday when they can get everone in chambers to cast their votes. It may still be shot down. God, let's hope so. Something like this shouldn't be allowed to stand at all, and certainly not with nine snoozers and losers refusing to be on record about it.
