I'm just going to take a short moment to vent this morning. Apparently there's an AP article up today which reports that actor George Takei (better known as Mr. Sulu of Star Trek fame) has come out of the closet as a gay man in a recent magazine article. To even call this story "news" is a bit of a stretch. It's not like Takei is a judge or a legislator making rulings on matters affecting gay rights, so as far as I'm concerned, whether he chooses to go public with his sexual orientation is nobody's business but his.
What is more disturbing is the barely concealed, homophobic reaction from the right wing. Take a look at Wizbang today. (If you can mange it without gagging.) They make the extra effort to dig up a photo of Takei looking as effeminate as possible and provide links to a disgusting song from the Howard Stern Show which makes fun of the actor for being gay. The comments section is rife with drooling, right wing knuckledraggers who are quick to get in their little jibes about Takei's masculinity, liberally peppered with their snickering Seinfeld references to "... not that there's anything wrong with that." (Which has become homophobe code language for, "Obviously there's a lot wrong with that, but we'll get crucified if we say so, so we'll go the PC route and say this instead" nudge nudge wink wink)
And still, to my never ending amazement, there are gays who join the Republican party and vote for their candidates. That's like women supporting Pat Buchanan.
