Was the investigation, which could lead to indictments of some very senior Bush officials, a distraction? Could he focus on his job? The president replied with a smile: “There’s some background noise here . . .”
That’s one way of putting it. It is the kind of background noise you hear when you are tied to a railway track and hear a goods train thundering towards you.
Although we might all like to see some indictments to fulfill our personnel requirements for vindictive revenge I'm not sure that they are even required now. The damage has been done. Rove was just an attack dog and Libby a dedicated true believer but Cheney is the one who has been exposed here. Add the Lawrence Wilkerson talk last week and the much anticipated Brent Scowcroft, with a cameo by Bush 41, article in The New Yorker to the mix and it looks like Cheney is in a lot of trouble. I really find it hard to believe there won't be some indictments but they will just be the icing on the cake. The cake will taste pretty good even without the icing I think.
