One of those elements is support for George W. Bush. I believe it isn't just some movement conservatives and rightie bloggers who are having second thoughts about his "leadership." I suspect at least some of the elites may have decided he is no longer useful to them. If so, mass media will no longer wrap Dear Leader in a rosy glow. And if my suspicions are correct, there is no way Bush can recover. That duck is dead.I think it's more than outlived his usefulness, I suspect he is now seen as a liability. So what happened? A number of things. In part it is a result of the fall of the spin-mister Rove who has been caught up in the web of his own spin. We have seen the impact of Rove's reduced involvement over the last few months as third stringers like Andy Card call more of the shots. Cheney seems to be out of the White House loop. There are two theories on this, 1. Card and Bush have taken him out of the loop or 2. Cheney got fed up with Dubya's bumbling nonsense and took himself out. It's probably a combination of both. Another thing is you can only spin a disaster for so long before reality rears it's ugly head. The Bush administration has basically fucked up everything they have touched and chickens are finally coming home to roost. We have seen Bush getting some Clintonian press treatment in recent weeks. I suspect that is not because journalists have suddenly decided to be, well journalists, but because the conservative elite that calls the shots in the corporate media have let it be known they can take the gloves off.
And it goes beyond Bush. Tom Delay is also seen as someone who has outlived his usefulness and become a liability. The conservative elite don't like all the bad press and the corporations would like to see him gone because he has taken the raising of campaign funds to the level of a protection racket. The same can be said for anyone closely associated with Delay.
So Delay is finished, not because of Ronnie Earle but because of his bullying hubris that has made him as many covert enemies in the Republican ranks as it has made overt enemies among Democrats.
Bush himself is probably beyond lame duck and approaching dead duck. As the mid term elections approach any policy coming from the WH will be seen as radioactive.
The above reason is why it is essential that the Democrats strike now and strike hard. The conservative infrastructure is still in place at the local level. That must be broken now if the Democrats are going to capitalize on Republican weakness in DC. At this point I don't see it happening and it won't happen if left to the DLC and the DC Democrats.
