I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

A different kind of Republican felon

We have gotten used to Republican lawmakers who are also felons. Ex Oregon State Representative Dan Doyle is different however, he admits he's a felon. He also said he was sorry.
Ex-Rep. Doyle pleads guilty to felonies
SALEM -- Former legislator Dan Doyle pleaded guilty to 11 felonies Friday for falsely reporting what a prosecutor said was $150,000 in campaign money that he used for personal expenses.
Of course he's still a Republican and claims that while he is bad he's not as bad as the prosecutors say he is.
His attorneys, Marc Blackman and Greg Chaimov, said Doyle misreported about $100,000 in campaign money, not the $150,000 that prosecutors allege. The attorneys said Doyle spent less than $50,000 for personal use.
A new standard for unlawful activity in Oregon.
Doyle pleaded guilty to the most serious misconduct by an Oregon legislator during the decade Myers has been attorney general, said Kevin Neely, Myers' spokesman.

"The conduct in this case, we believe, is worse than any other case in which an elected official was accused of campaign finance violations," Neely said. "Mr. Doyle has established, really, a new standard for unlawful activity."
All in the family.
After Doyle pleaded guilty Friday, his wife, Victoria, 48, pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement on a campaign finance report in connection with her unsuccessful campaign for Marion County clerk last year. She apologized for her actions and said, "In my life, this is tragic."

"This has been devastating for her," her attorney, Andy Aubertine, told the judge.

Between their guilty pleas, the Doyles stood together and held hands.

Leggert sentenced Victoria Doyle to 10 days in a work-release center, 240 hours of community service and three years of probation. The judge also told her she was sad and disappointed because Americans already have a lot of cynicism about the political process, adding that while hers wasn't the biggest case to come along, it didn't help.
