The debacle that is the response to Katrina is indeed beyond politics....or at least it should be. Four years after 9-11 we have sent a message to the terrorists. That message is the US can't respond to an attack, natural or man made. This is a matter of national security. The reason is fairly simple, the Bush administration not only gutted FEMA he appointed a collection of "good old boys" political hacks to administer it. The people have seen the results of the Bush administrations mis-management on TV. The wingnuts in charge of the Bush Republican party put the flag of the party above the flag of the country. They will not respond unless public opinion demands it. Public opinion will be directed by the corporate media.
We all have an important job. That job is to keep the media honest. Reporting what a anonymous "senior Bush official" tells you without fact checking is not journalism and is not responsible and is fact an abuse of the power given to the press. We need to make it clear to the media that we will do the fact checking so they had sure as hell better do it before they publish. Read the paper and have your copy of the Katrina Time Line handy. When your "fact checking" doesn't match the "fact checking" of the paper tell the world. If you have your own blog post it. If you don't let someone who does know. We are always looking for tips and will credit you if you want. This may be the most important patriotic job we will ever have.
