Steve correctly points out that support for the war is plummeting. "Stay the Course" is no longer seen as a plan even by many hawkish conservatives. For example we have ProfessorBainbridge.com
Meanwhile, Bush continues to insult our intelligence with tripe like this:We have seen Chuck Hagel jump ship and expect to see more Republicans join him as the midterm elections approach. Steve points out that the MSM will turn against the war very soon. So where are the Bidens, the Clintons and the rest of the DLC on Iraq? They are continuing the "we can't be against the war" mantra that failed the Democrats in 2004."Our troops know that they're fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere to protect their fellow Americans from a savage enemy," Bush said in his weekly radio address. {Ed: Full text here}
"They know that if we do not confront these evil men abroad, we will have to face them one day in our own cities and streets, and they know that the safety and security of every American is at stake in this war," he said.
I guess that's all he has left. After all, if Iraq's alleged WMD programs were the casus belli, why aren't we at war with Iran and North Korea? Not to mention Pakistan, which remains the odds-on favorite to supply the Islamofascists with a working nuke. If Saddam's cruelty to his own people was the casus belli, why aren't we taking out Kim Jong Il or any number of other nasty dictators? Indeed, what happened to the W of 2000, who correctly proclaimed nation building a failed cause and an inappropriate use of American military might? And why are we apparently going to allow the Islamists to write a more significant role for Islamic law into the new Iraqi constitution? If throwing a scare into the Saudis was the policy, so as to get them to rethink their deals with the jihadists, which has always struck me as the best rationale for the war, have things really improved on that front?
You can bet the administration is looking for a way out--one that will be well underway before the midterm elections. Did Hagel really jump ship or was he a point man? Here in Oregon will we see Gordon Smith come out for disengagement from Iraq before Ron Wyden? The DLC is not only out of touch with the Democratic base it is spinelessly stupid. It's time to free the Democratic Party from the DC Democrats once and for all. And Mrs Clinton and Mr Biden, forget 2008.
Update
Carla at Preemtive Karma directs us over to this story in The Salt Lake City Tribune. Even in Utah, a state that is a red as you can get, 2500 people show up for an anti-war rally and Bush protest. The tide has turned but not the DLC.
