The Republicans are now in a position where they have to pay the piper. The piper of course is the religious right, a very vocal minority, who's votes have put the Republicans firmly in power. The entire Republican plan, hatched years ago, worked very well because up until now the Republicans have not been able to make good on their promises. Overturning Roe VS Wade has been the carrot that the Republicans have been dangling in front of the religious right to get their support. Well now the Republicans are in a position to overturn it. That's the problem. Once it's overturned--no more carrot. What's to keep the congregations showing up on election day to vote against their own best interests. Gay rights will not prove to be a suitable replacement as gay marriage is going not going anywhere and civil unions are just not an issue that really fires people up in opposition. Another problem for the Republicans is that 60% of the population wants Roe VS Wade left alone while only 30% want it overturned. In the end the Republicans could lose the religious right because of apathy and lose moderates and independents because they were responsible for Roe VS Wade being overturned. There are Republican strategists that are aware of this conundrum and not sleeping at night.
