How the Lure of a Cool River Led to Grief for a Boy's KinIs there still prejudice in the United States? We report, you decide
For weeks, Joseph Johnson and his friends had been climbing through a gap in a railway fence to play manhunt, a variation on hide-and-seek, along the Bronx River. On Monday evening they went down again, only this time they found another group of boys who proposed a trip onto the river in a makeshift wooden raft.
It sounds like a summer idyll out of Huckleberry Finn. But this idyll quickly turned dark. After paddling out on the raft, Joseph, 14, ended up in the river and disappeared in its murky current, despite a heroic effort by one of his friends to save him.
Yesterday afternoon, after almost a day of underwater searching, police divers found Joseph's body in the river, not far from where he went under. His stiffened form, dressed only in long black shorts, was brought to the riverside, where a group of his friends and relatives had been keeping vigil throughout the day.
