I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Deja Vu all over again...but not quite
The identification of "Deep Throat" gives us an opportunity to look at a crisis in American history and politics. The timing is such that we can compare the Watergate era with the current situation. The comparison is frightening both for what the past and the present have in common and what they don't. The now and the then share a secretive and dishonest administration waging an increasingly unpopular and unsuccessful military adventure. What they don't have in common is an atmosphere where the press would or could do what Woodward and Bernstein did. We don't even need a "Deep Throat", we have the Downing Street Memo which proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the administration, including both the President and the Vice President, lied to the American People, The Congress and the world. What do we get from the cooperate media on the memo? Virtually nothing. There has been more coverage of it on Fox News than on CNN or MSNBC or in the New York Times. The authenticity of the memo has not been denied by the administration. If lying about sex in the oval office is an impeachable offense then lying about a war that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries surely must be. But still no discussion on the TV or cable networks. Democracy dies when the press no longer reports or investigates the truth. Democracy survived the crisis of Watergate because the press was doing it's job. Democracy is experiencing a crisis just as serious now but we no longer have a press.
