Extinct?
At the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago, the Wooly mammoth was unable to adapt to changing conditions. The result; the last wooly mammoth was seen 8 to 10 thousand years ago.
Like the large ice sheets 10,000 years ago cheap and plentiful oil is becoming nothing more then a memory. This shift also has wooly mammoths.
GM, Ford see weak sales as rivals soar
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday reported lower April U.S. vehicle sales as high gasoline prices and ebbing demand for their once profitable SUVs caused them to lose traction again to Japanese rivals.Ford and General Motors contributed to their own problems by fighting any attempts to increase fuel economy standards and putting all of their resources into the profitable large SUVs and trucks. Meanwhile Toyota, Nissan and Honda have been developing fuel efficient hybrids. Adapt or die, it applies to business as well as animals.
The decline spelled more trouble for Detroit. The two largest U.S. automakers face mounting financial hardships as they lose more U.S. market share -- their industrial lifeblood -- to fast-growing foreign competitors.
By contrast, Toyota Motor Corp., the richest automaker on the planet with a market capitalization greater than that of GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler combined, said its April U.S. sales rose 21 percent from last year for its best month ever.
Japan's Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said its sales jumped 27 percent, meanwhile, and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. also reported double-digit gains.
