There have been seven two term presidents since World War 2. Most presidents eventually run across some rocky road in their second term, but not till later on. I know that Dear Leader has been wanting to be remembered as a historic figure in the American Presidency. Now he can. As Joe Gandelman tells us, Bush has set a record for low approval ratings at this point in his term.
Here are the ratings for presidents as recorded by Gallup in the March following their re-election:
Truman, 1949: 57%.
Eisenhower, 1957: 65%.
Johnson, 1965: 69%.
Nixon, 1973: 57%.
Reagan, 1985: 56%.
Clinton, 1997: 59% .
Bush, 2005: 45% .
Woo hoo! A new record! Now, I know that Clinton was a popular guy, Reagan was very widely loved, (if only for his Bonzo movies) and around the time I was born, "Everybody liked Ike." But there's a few more names on that list. My lord! Nixon is on that list and he beats Bush by a full 12% at this stage. And, dare we look further.... JOHNSON! I don't care what anybody says, or what party he was in... Johnson was taking the rap for Vietnam full force at that point. And he beats Bush by 24%.
It's truly humbling to be in the presence of such a trend setting record breaker.
