Speaking of grandstanding, the move by the Republican leaders of the Senate and House to subpoena Terri Schiavo was tacky, alarming, sick and cruel. Talk about abuse of power. They reasoned that if they issued a subpoena to a woman in a vegetative state (who obviously cannot testify before Congress), no one could follow the local judge's order to remove her feeding tube, for that would be interfering with congressional business. The leaders of the party that claims to be against big government have decided its fine to insert the federal government into a painful family decision. I don't know about you, but if my family has to face such a moment, I don't want Tom DeLay butting in. No doubt, hundreds--if not thousands--of families across the nation are wrestling with this sort of issue. Should Bill Frist start reviewing all these cases? They have taken out the feeding tube this afternoon. I hope for the sake of Terri's husband and yes, even her parents they let what is left of Terri die in peace.
