I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

It's not a matter of choice

In a recent post I sort of came to the defense of "pro-life" Democrats. I recieved a hostile comment and a hostile link from The Sideshow:
Middle Earth Journal is talking to itself about A lot of Bull at the DLC. The Sideshow, of course, takes the position that the only pro-life position is pro-choice.
A progressive friend of mine told me today that he was uncomfortable with abortion. This is a non-religious individual not an evangelical christian etc. This is an issue with many questions and, in my opinion, few answers and is anything but a simple black and white issue.

For starters I will anger many. I don't accept the "pro-choice" argument. The only real question here is whether or not a fetus is a human being. Our society has decided that it is not acceptable to consider non-whites as something other than human. There is some percentage of the population that does not agree with this but the laws of our society give non-whites the same consideration as whites. If society decides that the fetus is indeed a human being it follows that abortion is murder under the laws of the United States; indeed, no different than killing an infant or small child. In some societies female infants have been, or even still are, killed because too many females is considered a burden to the tribe, community or society. Our society also frowns on this practice. Does a society as a whole have the right to decide that a fetus is a human being? Yes the same right it had to decide that non-whites and female infants had the same rights as human beings.

Should abortion be legal is not a question of "choice". The only question is whether a fetus is a human being or not. For society as a whole that is a decision society must make and the laws will reflect that.

Do I think a fetus is a human being? Do I think that abortion should be legal? Those are not my choices to make any more than it is my choice to decide that one or more races are not human beings. It is Societies "choice" not my "choice".
