Juan Cole is
covering a story which, mysteriously, most of the MSM has failed to pick up on. (Except the always reliable BBC, of course.) The basic story is that thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of residents of Fallujah have staged a demonstration at the gates of the city. Their demands are fairly simple:
- No living under a military occupation
- Facilitation of their return to their city
- Return of services
- Speedy reconstruction of damages
- Monetary remuneration for the citizens
They are also protesting the requirement that they present identification papers in order to enter the city. Many of them claim that such papers were left behind when they fled for their lives ahead of the US attack.
Protesters carried some signs that put a more human face on the situation.
Children marched with placards reading "Where is my Father?" or "Where is my house, you supposed Liberators?"
It's not such a very happy new year in Fallujah.
