Harold Meyerson presents us with A Tale of Two Texans where he compares Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush. Although Vietnam will forever taint the presidency of LBJ his domestic accomplishments were considerable. I'm not going to discuss the entire article, you can check it out yourself or see the Bull Moose analysis, but the final paragraph says it all.
That Lyndon Johnson made George W. Bush's presidency possible, then, has to rank as one of those great ironies that history apparently adores. For Johnson's mission was to bring Texas up to the standards of the United States. And Bush's mission is to bring the United States down to the standards of Texas.I'm sure that when history determines that George W. Bush was one of the worst presidents in US history Texas will decide that his phony Texas twang didn't make him a Texan after all.
