As scripted as the "gaffe" by Bush was, so was the alleged "scramble" by White House operatives to "clarify" the President's strong support for the Amendment. And, just as Bush was able to slyly insert for the record the impossible threshold of 67 votes to pass the Amendment in the Senate, the media mop up afterwards includes the strategically placed "passing of the onus" from the White House to the Congress. The Christian Right was expecting to sit back and watch as the Bush administration ushered this and other aspects of their agenda through Congress. That certainly is Karl's MO. Bush/Rove's dependence on the Radical Christian Right has really put them between a rock and a hard place. This will require some heroic Rovian spin to get out of. They can't deliver what they led the Christian wingnuts to believe they could. If they are seen as not keeping their perceived promises the wingers won't support their programs for things like Privitization of Social Security that many of even the most dense "fundies" can see is not really in their best interest. This will be something that's interesting to watch and will take all of Roves spinning skills to keep from getting crushed between that rock and hard place.
But, the calculated intention of King Karl was to suck some wind out of these gloating, pompous wing nuts, then baffle, befuddle and eventually appease them. They might suspect the strategy I just detailed, however if the muted outrage does not reach the Sunday chat show circuit, they haven't figured it out. What you just witnessed dear readers, is called "muddling".
The boys at RoveVision parsed out just enough reassurance needed, to credibly convince a segment of the Christian Right movement the White House strongly backs the Amendment, while establishing irrefutable facts and obstacles for those who get close enough (or loud enough) to protest, realizing they have been hoodwinked. You see, the Evangelical Conservative movement is at its most powerful and united, at full strength - like on Election Day.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

The scripted ‘gaffe’
TCF sees the current flip flop of Bush on the Gay Marriage amendment as a Rovian trial balloon.
