I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Education News (or lack thereof)

Most readers have probably long since heard about the court victory in Atlanta which finally forced the "educators" there to remove their rediculous "evolution is a theory" stickers from the schools' textbooks. What is perhaps even more interesting was the reactions of the Flat Earth Crew following the decision. Now obviously I can understand being upset over losing. But it's the way they are framing their complaint which, in my opinion, gives us a deeper look into the thought process backing up these moves.

But some parents and religious conservatives decried the ruling as another in a string of what opponents call activist judges overruling the wishes of elected officials -- often on matters of religion.

"It's another example of how the bench is dictating to people what symbols they can display, if they can pray or not pray or if they can teach a particular subject," said Sadie Fields, head of the Georgia chapter of the Christian Coalition.

Notice, when asked for comment, the Flat Earth Representative immediately moved the story over to some sort of argument about the display of religious symbols and prayer. Where on Earth could anyone get the idea that the teachers were trying to condemn religion and prayer? They were simply teaching science and objecting to right wing stickers that cast doubt on their curriculum.

This is a group of people (and they exist in pockets all over the nation) who have traded off the chance for their own children to get a quality education in exchange for a theocratic battlefield where they thought they stood a chance of victory. I had been under the impression that taking care of one's children was in line with one of the principle tenets of Christianity. Apparently I missed a couple sections of the New Testament.
