A favorite of both Ron's and mine, the Bull Moose weighs in this week on a topic that I think is equally important to Democrats, independents, and moderate Republicans. Specifically, it is a caution to always have a solution to problems ready before you criticize the majority party for their failures. To briefly quote, " The Moose suggests that the donkey have a better plan on social security reform than the word, "no".
Social Security, as the antlered one points out, has long been considered the "Third Rail" of American politics. Democrats have always assumed that people would never allow it to be messed with. However, that's no longer the case. People have been made increasingly aware that the system in its current state is broken. Left untouched, it's going to go broke in the lifetime of the generation now entering the workforce. Change has to be made, and people are going to accept that out of necessity. Simply screaming at the Republican candidates saying they shouldn't touch it doesn't work any more.
I don't know enough about the specifics of the Bush plan to fix it to say whether or not it has a chance, but if the Dems want to argue the point and win some voters over they need to have their own plan. I'm sure the system can be salvaged, and a good first step towards breaking the conservative deathgrip on Congress in 2006 would be to pen a winning plan to do it that will be the most popular with seniors and the soon to be retired baby boomers.
