Two Hundred and twenty years ago there were two ideologies in American politics, The Federalists lead by Alexander Hamilton and the Republicans lead by Thomas Jefferson. The Federalist's vision of the newly created United States was a feudalist society like England without the king. They believed in a large powerful central government with a large Army and the leaders would only come from the "American Aristocracy". Oh yes, they hated France. The Republican vision was quite different believing in a small central government and participation by all. (Of course all back then meant white males.) The Federalists were in charge for the first 12 years of this countries history under George Washington and the reluctant Federalist John Adams. In that 12 years they overstepped their bounds with anti French rhetoric and actions and the passing of the Alien and Sedation act limiting free speech and freedom of the press. After the defeat of Adams by Jefferson the Federalsits faded away until now. The current cabal controlling both the Republican party and the country are referred to as many things, but neo-Federalist is perhaps a term that could be used. The original Federalists didn't have the means to be imperialistic but the desire was there. Bush's "ownership society" is like feudalism in that it really means that 2 or 3 percent of the population own everything. As Bull Moose correctly observes, these neo-federalists will overstep their bounds and eventually fade away because what they stand for is contrary to the foundation this country was built on.
