It would appear that there are some states ready to embrace the 21st century and others who want to return to the 16th century. There was talk after the election of succession of the blue states but that is a bad idea and not at all likely. So what to do? In the late 1770's when the design of our federal republic was being created most people identified with their colony and the federal government they had in mind was an evil necessity to win the war against Great Britain. It was thought that at the most the central government should be responsible for defense and diplomacy and some even felt that when the war was over it would not be necessary at all. When the abolition of slavery was forced down the throats of the deep south the cry was heard that it violated "states rights". The same cry was heard when the federal government mandated desegregation. Well it would appear that the progressives and moderates are now on the other end of the gun with cultural conservatives trying to force 16th century Calvinist values down the throats of the "enlightened" blue states.
It's time for progressives and moderates to join the states rights cause. Let the south have their 16th century fiefdoms just don't let them tell us we need to join them. Let them teach their children creationism in school, that will leave more spaces in the universities for the blue state children who have had a real science education. Let them watch their economies fall even further behind as the educated people who make the economy run refuse to move to their states. All we ask is that you let the rest of us make the grand march into the 21st century. Since the country is really various shades of purple rather than red and blue this would probably be really good for U-Haul as those who find themselves in the wrong century choose to relocate.
Very interesting post, Ron. It might be the path to the gun, abortion, religious freedoms, and gay marriage issues that would allow us progessive minders to live in a moderate society, win in red states that would feel less invaded by our views if we confined them to a states rights issue and would make those same states suffer the consequences of their backward ways over time.
