If the election were held today and the votes were counted fairly, Senator John Kerry would probably win. But the votes won't be counted fairly, and the disenfranchisement of minority voters may determine the outcome. The message from Paul Krugman today is that not much has changed since 2000 so don't expect the election to be fair and honest. Jeb Bush is up to the same old tricks down in America's very own Bannana Republic.
Florida is the prime, but not the only, example. Recent Florida polls suggest a tight race, which could be tipped by a failure to count all the votes. And votes for Mr. Kerry will be systematically undercounted. The Gallup poll is preparing us for a Bush win by undercounting minorities and young people, the same thing that will happen in the election. With the country as polarized as it is any perception of fraud resulting in a Bush win will result in chaos in this country.
Note
The Left Coaster's Steve Soto is given credit by Mr. Krugman for his fine analysis of the polling data.
