paradox at The Left Coaster has a post on the state of things in this United States. You should read this really good piece. I am very pessimistic as can be seen from my comment to the above post:

Societies like living organisms have a life cycle. They are born, have an enthusiastic and vibrant middle age and then systems begin to shut down and fail eventually resulting in death. That's where we are at. The comunication systems have failed and there is a terminal apathy among a majority of the "citizens". This won't be the first society to miss it's "last chance".
