Microsoft prepares largest ever software upgrade
One of the largest software upgrades ever is being prepared by US software giant Microsoft. This is in response to the numerous trojans, worms and other security breaches since XP was introduced.
Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the Windows XP operating system should be released in late August and will be available to at least 233 million users. The second major update for XP, it has cost Microsoft in excess of $1 billion. But users will be able to download the software upgrade for free or order it on CD at no charge. It will also come installed as standard on new computers running Windows XP.
But not so fast!!!
Compatibility with other software could also prove a problem. Testing has shown that some programs will be incompatible and this could make companies reluctant to roll the update out to hundreds of desktop computers without rigorous testing. An old Microsoft trick, make the OS incompatible with other peoples software. This company is as criminal as the Republican party. Let's see, create an operating system that's full of holes and charge too much money for it. Other companies then spend billions to write code that will work with it. Then Microsoft spends billions to fill the holes which makes the OS incompatible with other the other companies code.
But Wysopal suggests even individual users might do well to be cautious. "I think it is always good to install service packs soon after release but not on day one," he says. "I usually wait a week or so to make sure that there aren't serious compatibility issues."
