I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Throwing the dog a bone

Congress Puts Off Action in Right-To-Die Case
Could it be because of the reaction of the non Radical Christian element of the right? Even the The right wing New York Post was disgusted by the involvement of congress in the Terri Schiavo case.
OK, lets look at this for what it was, the Republicans throwing a bone to their dog. Who is their pet dog, the Radical Christian Right of course. And the dog was getting restless. None of these hypocritical Republican "lawmakers" gives a damned about Terri Schiavo but they saw an opportunity to make some points. What I don't think they anticipated was the points they were losing from the rest of the party base. In that light the backing down while continuing to spin is not too surprising. If they can put off any action and try to blame the Democrats for obstructing their actions until what is left of Terri dies they can pick up a few points from the religious wingnuts and minimize losing points from the rest.

Update

Over at the Left Coaster larre has an excellent post on this. He quotes Attorney Andrew Cohen at CBS Court Watch who thinks the Republicans know damned good and well this is unconstutional and will not hold up in court.
I'm also saying that there are probably some smart folks on Capitol Hill who are supporting this legislation knowing that ultimately the courts will strike it down. That way, being the politicians that they are, they will be able to blame the heartless judiciary for the result and still will be able to say to their constituents that they tried their best. It is the politics of cynicism at its very best (or very worst).
The Bastards!!!!!!!!!!!
